When rounding, we use a "Mountain Number Line" to help us find what a number rounds to.
Steps to Rounding:
1- Decide which place value place you are rounding to and circle that digit in your number.
2- Make your mountain number line.
3- On the left side of your mountain, the number will be found as follows; write down all numbers left of the number you circled, then write the number you circled, then write a zero for every number to the right of the number you circled.
4- On the right side of your mountain, the number is found by adding the amount you're rounding to to the number on the left side. For example, if you're rounding to the 10,000 place then add 10,000 to the number on the left side of the mountain.
5- At the top of the mountain will be the number halfway between the number on the left side and the right side.
6- Then compare your original number to the number in the middle. Is it greater than or less than the number in the middle of the mountain? If it's greater than, it rounds up to the larger number. If it's less than, it rounds down to the smaller number.
7- Circle the number it rounds to.
